well... hes trying to? simplify - not to make it harder. In that case it is better if you are able to get a figure, that is a natural square... 3 x 4 = 3 x 2˛ | 9 x 2 = 3˛ x 2... because squareroute of 2˛ = 2 ... or: SQR(9) = SQR(3˛) = 3 ... and that is way more comfortable... try to do the same with 6 x 2... then it is SQR(6) x SQR(2) which both are irrational so very uncomfortable to calculate with... get it?

This is a good advice. As a math tutor I never try to solve a problem for my students either. I may give them hints or ask them what the solution should be and why. I find that this? is a good way to make the student think.
